Eleanor L. Gabel

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Eleanor Gabel, 91 died on Sept. 8th at the Highlands in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania.

Born Eleanor Marie Lauterborn in Albany, NY to George Edgar Lauterborn and Eleanor Russell Lauterborn, Eleanor was a beautiful woman who lived an active life. She was a musician, an avid golfer, an animal lover, and a boating enthusiast. Among her proudest achievements were her three holes-in-one!  The granddaughter of German and Irish immigrants, she was the first member of her family on this side of the Atlantic to graduate from college, Good Counsel in Westchester County, NY.  She lived in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Washington State, and Florida, and everywhere she went she brightened the lives of those around her.  She played clarinet in symphony orchestras and sang in choirs.  We fondly remember her stories of playing in the Tanglewood student orchestra under then student conductor Leonard Bernstein.  In Florida, Ellie spent many years volunteering at Martin Memorial Medical Center in Stuart culminating with her title as Chairwoman of the Hospital Auxiliary of the State of Florida.

A nature lover, she was particularly involved in efforts to save injured sea turtles.

Eleanor was predeceased by her husbands William Ora Dresser and John Carl Gabel She is survived by one daughter, Cheryl Dresser Dorko, wife of Jeffrey F. Dorko of Wyomissing PA and three sons, John M. Dresser of Westerly, RI, Thomas W. Dresser of Vero Beach, FL, and Robert S. Dresser of Mechanicsburg, PA. She is also survived by grandchildren Keri Dorko, Samuel Dorko, Nicholas Dresser, Hollis Dresser Farrington, Christopher Dresser, Matthew Dresser and Hadyn Dresser; as well as five great grandchildren.

Her ashes will be interred alongside her parents in the Russell family plot in St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands NY and there will be a private celebration of her life at Wolferts Roost Country Club in Albany, NY.  CRAMP-HUMMEL Funeral Home, Centre Park, Reading, PA. has charge of arrangements.
